Where Her Heart Lies
In 1910, Celeste McCurdy returns to her childhood home in Colorado after quitting finishing school in New York City. Fed up with propriety and jilted by her suitor, Charles, she is eager to settle back home in the country. She soon sets her sights on old friend Logan, who is a country boy, and most definitely the furthest thing from Charles.
Logan has lived in Colorado his whole life and is happy doing odd jobs around town. But when Celeste returns after several years away, he begins to think that earning a decent wage might be a good idea if he ever wants to support a wife. As Logan begins to explore his options, trouble arises when Charles strolls into town to make amends with Celeste. Naturally, Logan and Charles begin to compete to win Celeste’s heart, both focusing on ousting the other. Celeste becomes increasingly frustrated with the situation and their behavior.
This is a typical historical romance with the girl torn between two very different men. There are no big surprises, and Celeste makes the expected choice. I did appreciate that the characters are all imperfect. Logan has a limp, is quickly frustrated, and not well educated. Charles is focused on money, and although he is generous, he often focuses more on winning than on loving. Likewise, Celeste is shy and uncomfortable around other people in town, and has trouble fitting in. With slight inspirational elements interwoven throughout, the overall effect is a nice, gentle romance.
