Two young detectives, Marisee and Robert, introduce the reader to an engaging and enchanting mysterious world of London’s Elemental spirits, including fiery dragons, airy Fumis, watery Chads and the earthbound Magogs. The city’s familiar historic settings are used as a backdrop to an alternative magical explanation of its past, with a devastating threat to its present because of the power and greed of a man and an ancient guild who use dark magic to abuse an enchanted cauldron.

This inclusive action-packed adventure sets the reader’s imagination alight with beautiful descriptive fast-paced action scenes that are supported by the developing characters of Robert and Marisee.

Drama and mystery seep through every page. The personal impact of each child’s own story threads throughout and influences their viewpoint and perspective of life; Robert’s slave background and the devastating impact this has had on him and his family, provide much food for thought as the issue of slavery is carefully highlighted through the developing quest.

Marisee’s search for her missing mum explains her character which develops with the plot progression through their journey of discovery. Both make sound discussion points for any class discussion.

Familial bonds and the importance of friendship and loyalty, courage along with the heartbreak of loss, or the fear of it when a loved one is suffering or threatened, are all topics that may resonate with the reader.

This brilliantly written story is a whirlwind of magical action and fantastical beasts that spark magic throughout the pages, whilst carefully weaving in the darkness that was part of our past. An excellent read for 9+ years old. Highly recommended.
