Venice, 1927. While attending an exotic costume ball on the Grand Canal during their honeymoon in Venice, newlywed detectives, Jane Wunderly and her husband, Redvers, become entangled in a mysterious murder. Numerous elite and colorful guests enjoy the lavish party hosted by eccentric socialite Clara Morton until Clara’s ex-husband’s corpse is found in her palazzo garden. Fear, suspicion, and blame run rampant among the crowd, each becoming a possible suspect with criminal intent. When Clara accuses Jane’s friend, Deanna Park, an actress and tarot reader, of the heinous act, the Wunderlys charge into action, combining their considerable espionage abilities to track down the perpetrator. Suspense, deception, and danger unfold as the sleuths weave and dodge through myriad, murky waterways and historic landmarks attempting to capture the killer.

This intriguing, well-paced novel is the seventh and latest historical mystery in Agatha Award-winning author Neubauer’s series – the Jane Wunderly mysteries. Once again, Neubauer brings her exceptional, immersive world-building talents to yet another international setting. She deftly crafts the romantic, enigmatic backdrop of Venice through meticulous attention to geographical and cultural detail, and vivid description. Engaging, entertaining, and authentic dialogue offers insight and depth into the personalities of a robust cast of iconic, one-of-a-kind characters. The tender, nuanced relationship between the author’s protagonists, Jane, the captivating heroine, and Redvers, her equally fascinating husband, draws the reader into the chase as the investigative team delves deep into winding cobblestone alleys and labyrinthine canals. This murder mystery is a delightful escape with an ingenious plot and a surprising ending. Don’t miss the previous books for further enjoyment of Jane’s global adventures.
