Puffin The Mythmakers
This unique version of the famous Arthurian legend holds its own captivating magic.
The engaging characters, coupled with the many mythical creatures, add to the rich tapestry of the plot and time itself. Gwyn and Merlin build a lovely friendship that changes and grows over time, and as Arthur enters the dynamic, humour is woven through the drama as skilfully as the threads on a tapestry.
Nature is described in context with life, song, and time; a natural power that is threatened by the devastation and greed of the retreating Roman army as it withdraws from Britain’s 5th century shores. Can Gwyn stop them from tearing down the ancient magical Oakheart? How can she? With the help of Merlin? What of Arthur? Read on and turn each beautifully illustrated and written page – you will not be disappointed.
From my initial attraction to the book’s beautiful cover, to the absorbing opening lines, there is a pull that builds and intrigues as the dynamic plot begins following young Gwyn on her extraordinary adventure. The skilfully described intricate detail is effortlessly slipped into the action, delighting the reader as each myth becomes their reality and the reader is left pondering where the fine line between the wonder of nature and the magic of myth blurs. This is a beautiful book in so many ways; from the original and engaging retelling of the Arthurian legend to the illustrations that bring nature to life on the page of this magical historical fantasy adventure.
Suitable for 10 – 14 years, but I would highly recommend it for readers of all ages beyond its original target market.
