Echoes on a Fractal Line
Echoes on a Fractal Line is a dual-timeline novel that skillfully weaves together the stories of four Scottish women, past and present. In the modern day, Lauren and Hazel collaborate on a historical project giving voice to ordinary people caught up in major events in Scotland’s past. But when they uncover a body in an unmarked grave, jealousy and rivalry surface, threatening to unravel everything they have worked for. In 1715 at Alloa Tower, Mairead—the wife of a man defending his clan during the Scottish uprisings—clashes with Jeannie, a widowed healer. As tensions rise and loyalties are tested, the two women must find common ground to protect those they love.
This debut novel by Lee-Anne McAulay is a beautifully evocative story. All four women are so well developed that you truly care for them, and they linger in the mind long after the final page. One scene in particular stays with you, resonating long after reading. The book is immersive and engaging, with vivid settings and clear attention to historical detail. I initially thought it was based on a true story—especially as Alloa Tower is real—and feel a historical note would have been a welcome addition, though its absence doesn’t detract from the experience.
A well-written, gripping story. An impressive debut.
