Matilde di Canossa ruled during a period marked by persistent warfare, political intrigue, and repeated excommunications by the Church. In the final years of her life, she supports Henry V in his ascent to emperor, although the methods by which this goal was achieved are deeply contested. After being granted the title of Empress of Italy by Henry V, Matilde is forced to navigate the escalating conflict between the emperor and the papacy. As a devout Catholic and loyal supporter of the Church, she faces mounting challenges, especially when bishops begin to question her reputation and legitimacy as a ruler. Matilde will need to find a way to balance the needs of her people, honor her truce with Henry, and maintain her allegiance to the papacy.

The author effectively explores the difficulties of ruling in a male-dominated society, vividly portraying Matilde’s struggle to preserve her authority and assert her right to govern on an equal footing with her male counterparts. However, the narrative offers limited insight into Matilde’s emotional life or inner thoughts, which results in a somewhat detached reading experience. Greater attention to her earlier life and personal development might have provided additional depth, allowing readers to form a stronger emotional connection with Matilde as the central figure. Matilde is a captivating and little-known ruler of the past, and exploring more of her life’s journey, coupled with the author’s lush historical period details, would have been welcome.
