The Gift of the Great Buffalo
The biannual Métis buffalo hunt usually means fun with friends and food for the coming months. However, with the new “iron horses” that cross the prairie, buffalo are becoming scarce. Day after day the scouts fail to find any buffalo. Rose wants to help. She sets out alone on horseback, using traditions she’s learned to seek and call the buffalo.
This warm, charming, and beautifully illustrated story gives readers a glimpse into everyday Native American family life in the 1800s. With a child protagonist who takes initiative, and a supportive community, it’s a refreshing antidote to the portrayal of Native Americans in older literature. Ages 4-8.
