An Unconventional Lady: A Low-Spice Regency Romance

In Regency England, Miss Eleanor Wilde faces two problems: first, the horror of learning her mother might be a murderer; and second, that she will not be permitted to achieve her dream of opening a school for young ladies unless she marries Mr. Abernathy, the most boring man she knows.

These two problems come to a head when her home, Keatley Hall, hosts the Natural Philosophers Society’s symposium on phrenology, with its special guest, Mr. Thomas Bauer. Also attending this is the charming solicitor Gabriel Rowe, who believes Mr. Bauer to be a fraud and plans to expose him. Eleanor and Gabriel find themselves assisting each other to find and reveal the truth, which leads them to exciting adventures in London, and to closer acquaintance.

This Regency romance has more complex plotting and more action than most in the genre. The characters, from Eleanor’s friend Phoebe to the housekeeper Mrs. Chatterly, are well developed, and there is a minimum of drawing room conversation. An Unconventional Lady is a welcome addition to this bestselling author’s considerable list of titles. It’s a charming read that involves the reader from start to finish.
