A Death on Corfu (A Minnie Harper Mystery)

Written by Emily Sullivan
Review by Lisa Lowe Stauffer

Widow Minnie Harper, an Englishwoman, is raising her two children on Corfu following the death of her husband many years before. Money is tight, so when renowned mystery writer Mr. Dorian offers her a job typing up his hand-written chapters, she can’t say no.  Their relationship is rocky at first, reminiscent of Elizabeth’s and Mr. Darcy’s misunderstanding of each other in Pride and Prejudice. But when Minnie stumbles on the body of a local servant, and the police are content not to investigate beyond arresting the local vagrant, Minnie and Mr. Dorian partner up to solve the crime. In 1898 Corfu, a woman seen unchaperoned with a man starts rumors, making solving this crime all the more complicated.

This cozy mystery brings the setting to life. The characters are well-developed, including the Greek locals. It’s hard to say if this is a mystery with a romantic subplot, or a romance with a mystery subplot. Either way, it’s a fun read that will have you craving baklava and spanakopita, and possibly your own tall, dark, and handsome writer. This is the first book in a new series.
