The Paris Deception

Written by Bryn Turnbull
Review by Sean Churchfield

Set in occupied Paris during WW2, the story centres on artwork identified and seized by the occupying Nazis from a variety of sources. The two central figures, Sophie and Fabienne, work to thwart the programme by removing and hiding the pictures. Skilful forgery and a daring robbery form the backbone of the story, while the Nazi pogroms against the French Jewish community and “degenerate” art provide tension and urgency in the narrative.

I really enjoyed reading this book, becoming more engrossed as it went on. Around the core narrative, Bryn Turnbull weaves subplots of romance, deceit, and courage to create a rich story which builds around the central theme of the fate of the paintings. Recent tragedy, unexpected rebuilding of relationships, winemaking, and twists in the tale add complexity and drama throughout the book and are conveniently brought to a conclusion by the liberation of Paris.
