Mystery in the Highlands (The Scottish Ladies’ Detective Agency)

In this third installment of The Scottish Ladies Detective Agency series, set in 1911 Scotland, Maud McIntyre and Daisy, her lady’s maid, embark upon another mystery. Maud and Daisy leave Edinburgh for the Highlands after receiving a letter from the latter’s cousin. Clara expresses her concerns about the mysterious deaths of two ladies who belonged to her choir group. Little do Maud and Daisy know that they are in a race against time before the killer strikes again.

Mystery in the Highlands is a delightful, fast-paced read that sucks the reader in. Maud and Daisy are capable protagonists who lead us on an exciting but dangerous journey. Both the characterization and authentic dialogue work well. I adored the characters and the way they spoke (with a Scottish brogue). The plot is strong and the pacing consistent, and the killer’s use of riddles makes the story fascinating. Overall, I was impressed by the level of historical detail, though I would have liked to see an author’s note shedding light on the writer’s process, research, and decisions. This was a great read!
