My Brother’s Keeper

Tim Powers reimagines the lives of the Brontë siblings and weaves them together with British folklore. This intriguing and haunting novel is part mystery, part gothic fantasy, part horror.

Three of the children of Patrick Brontë make a blood bargain in childhood in the hope of restoring their older sister to life. Little do they realise that this pact and a family curse will come to haunt them when, in the 1840s, all four siblings are at home together again as adults. Emily finds an injured man by Ponden Kirk and reveals to her father that he had knowledge of Patrick and his family. Patrick confesses to being haunted all his life by a mysterious boy. It is now up to Emily to tie all these threads together. Emily becomes the heroine of the story as she seeks to save her family and stop the curse.

Even for a reader familiar with the Brontë story, this book offers intriguing insight and possibilities. If you are a fan of Bella Ellis’s Brontë mysteries or just a Brontë fan this book is a must read. Dark, gothic, chilling and atmospheric.
