The Other Edie Trimmer
Edie Trimmer is a talented young actress who is devastated when her best friend is chosen for the leading role in a production of the musical Oliver. Edie is fascinated by the Victorian period, which only adds to her disappointment. When presented with a real Victorian notebook and pen as a means of distraction from her gloom, she is determined to write a story all about a girl living in those times.
Jacqueline Wilson uses her masterly skill to take the reader back in time along with Edie as she embarks on a time-slip adventure. Her main character, both past and present, is quick-witted, talented, and resilient, making her an appealing protagonist. The story graphically illustrates the extreme poverty faced by some Victorian children in an accessible way for today’s young readership to understand.
Through Edie’s journey into the past the reader can empathise and appreciate how quickly the poor children on the streets or in the workhouse in Victorian times had to mature and face life’s hardships in order to survive. If they were orphans, they were extremely vulnerable and often relied on each other as much as they could. One theme that appeals is the development and testing of friendship bonds in both periods through Edie’s time travel.
Edie’s story in both worlds culminates with a delightful ending, making this a thoroughly absorbing and educational read for children of 9-12 years or adults who enjoy a beautifully written tale. Delightfully illustrated throughout by Rachael Dean.
