Margaret Tudor: The Life of Henry VIII’s Sister

Written by Melanie Clegg
Review by Edward James

None of the Tudor royal family has lacked attention from historians and novelists, but perhaps the one who has attracted the least coverage is Henry VIII’s elder sister, Margaret.  This is not because she is unimportant.  She was queen of Scotland and through her the Stuarts came to inherit the English crown a century later and her political and personal life was eventful and dramatic.  But all this happened in Scotland, so escapes the English history books.  She never broke into English history like her grand-daughter Mary, despite losing her husband at Flodden.

Clegg’s study is thorough and succinct and goes a long way to help understand Anglo-Scottish relations in the next generation, between Elizabeth and Mary.
