My Just Desire

In comparison to her famous husband, very little is known about Bess Ralegh (1565-c.1635). But Anna Beer has pieced together the records she could find to show a determined and politically savvy woman who grew in confidence and ability as the years progressed, and this in spite of her husband’s attainder (which Bess successfully contested). Beer’s persuasive style and adherence to accuracy bring both the woman and the period to life.
