Victory for the Ops Room Girls

Written by Vicki Beeby
Review by Clare Lehovsky

This is the finale of the series following three WAAFs (the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force) in the Second World War who are determined to do their bit for their country. Jess Halloway is the protagonist, and we find out about her past and realise why she puts on a persona with everyone around her, including her friends. Throughout the novel, as her character arc progresses, we see this bold personality realise that her friends will always be there for her, no matter how far she has fallen or could fall.

Beeby’s tale is well-written and makes sure that the reader is invested in each character. The book sheds interesting light on the impact that Bentley Priory in Stanmore had on the war. Between the sombre news of the war and the efforts the WAAFs are making against the V2 bombs, there are moments of joy and love throughout the novel, which remind you there is still life outside the fighting. Additionally, there is the element of government propaganda and the role that the cinema played in the war at promoting the work of the UK’s forces. Overall, the author has crafted a balanced novel that brings the war to an end and champions forgiveness and hope.
