The Duke’s Proposal for the Governess (Harlequin Historical)

Written by Eleanor Webster
Review by Misty Urban

Abby Carstens fascinates Randolph, the new Duke of Elmsend: she’s forthright, pragmatic, and possessed of a fine sense of humor as well as (of course) hidden beauty. When the family she works for asks Dolph’s aid in launching their daughter in society, Dolph insists Abby participate. Abby doesn’t feel at home in drawing rooms, but when Dolph takes them all to his estate to escape the dangers of London, Abby’s curiosity about the place inspires Dolph to take further interest in the estate and her. She doesn’t wish to be a duchess any more than he wishes to be a duke, but after a misstep, an adventure, and some falling in love, this likeable duo decides to forge their own future together.

Webster’s Regency romance moves merrily along, with early scenes full of humor and banter that keep the Cinderella trope feeling fresh. Abby’s confidence and spirit charm the grouchy duke to make the most of the inheritance he never wanted. A theme of feeling at home in one’s skin, if not in accord with the conventions of one’s culture, adds a welcome touch of gravitas to a familiar tale, while lively secondary characters consistently steal the scene. Winning.
