The Air Raid Girls: Wartime Brides (The Air Raid Girls Book 3)

Written by Jenny Holmes
Review by Cathy Kemp

In choosing this trio of young women as the central characters to create a story around the events of the Yorkshire Blitz, Holmes has used the opportunity to insert elements that are easily recognisable from this era.  The two Harrison sisters, Lizzie and Connie, have been the focus for their dad Bert since the early demise of their mum. They have been supported by him through childhood and now, taking on the dual roles of daytime work in their dad’s bakery allied with transitioning into air raid wardens once darkness fell, they risk their lives to protect their neighbours. Lizzie is planning her wedding to fiancé Bill, whilst sister Connie’s entanglement with Tom is facing a daunting decision.  The third member of this friendship group, Pamela, is drawn into a romantic relationship with a refugee, Fred, who becomes the target for some unsavoury racism that was rife at this time.

Thrown into this mix are other local characters who have a key impact on how these girls’ stories evolve, giving rise to a competent and engaging tale that keeps the reader’s attention throughout.
