Duke Darcy’s Castle: A Dare to Defy Novel

Review by Ray Thompson

Saddled by debts incurred by his predecessors, Lance Granville, the tenth Duke of Darcy, is faced with the imminent loss of his castle in Cornwall, when who should turn up at his door but an architect? A female architect. Who happens to be not only very attractive, but possessed of an enormous dowry. Have his prayers been answered? Well, maybe.

Like her sisters, Kathryn Atherton is a Vassar-educated American heiress, whose mother hopes she will marry an English lord. She, however, is determined to become an architect, even though in 1894 it is an almost exclusively male profession. Not that she does not share their attraction, but is she prepared to give up her dream? Or can they find a compromise?

The path both must discover involves the radical adjustment of long-held beliefs and expectations, and a willingness to judge others on their actions rather than their sometimes-ill-considered words. Some timely advice from sympathetic family members does nudge them in the direction of a happy ending, fortunately. Recommended to the romantically inclined.
