We’re going to Australia to better ourselves, Annie…’ Hearing those words from the lips of her fiancé, housemaid Annie’s heart is filled with both excitement and trepidation at the thought of leaving England and her family to sail with him to a new life on the other side of the world.”

Annie’s Story is a very enjoyable fictitious life story about a young servant moving to Australia with her husband in 1913. More in love with the man than with the opportunity, Annie tries to make do with her new life. Soon, however, she finds herself disappointed with it and also with her marriage.

There are love interests outside their marriage, betrayals and more familial complications – showing us some of the morals, double standards and conventions of those days. We follow our protagonists as they live through the Great War and on into the 1930s, portrayed with some historical background, with some chapters using different viewpoints and with smooth and well-paced writing.

Although the plot and its turns did not bring any surprises, the skilled setting of scenes and characters made this a very entertaining and worthwhile read.
