Review by Bonnie Kelso

Englishman Jack Robinson is a crew member aboard the Endurance on an epic journey, led by Sir Ernest Shackleton, to reach the South Pole by traversing Antarctica. Young Jack has taken his more experienced—and newly enlisted—brother’s place onboard, when England enters World War II. The ship makes port in Grytviken, South Georgia as they await optimal weather conditions, giving Jack the opportunity to develop a romantic relationship with Leah, a merchant’s daughter. Horrified by the town’s reputation for whaling, Leah is ready to escape the island, but Jack urges her to wait for his return in two years. The Endurance’s crew finally sets sail, encountering freezing temperatures, violent disputes, and iceberg-laden waves on their journey through the Weddell Sea.

Dynamic illustrations combine pen work with digitally manipulated photography to create excitement and tension in this layered story about heroism and survival. Author-illustrator Terrill Sullivan blends fascinating historical facts with ever-unfolding action, drama, and romance. The pace will keep the reader turning the pages until the end. There’s much to enjoy about this lively series as we step aboard the Endurance with this cast of historical and fictional characters. Young adult.
