While the City Sleeps (The Women of Midtown)
The year is 1913. Dr. Katherine Schneider is a dentist who works at Painless Parker Dentistry in New York City. In a male-dominated profession, there are many who are unaccustomed to seeing a female dentist. Nevertheless, Katherine works hard and is dedicated to her patients. She has a fondness for the handsome Lieutenant Jonathan Birch, the police officer who has looked after her in the past. Unbeknownst to her, the stalwart lieutenant shares the same longing for her. Things go awry when Katherine hears something a patient mutters about a nefarious plot while under the influence of laughing gas. When she is placed directly in the line of danger, the two of them have to work together to uncover the plot.
This first installment in the Women of Midtown series hooks the reader quickly, and the fast pace continues throughout the story. This book kept me on the edge of my seat from the first page. In Katherine and Jonathan, we have two compelling and authentically human characters. It was delightful to watch these characters interact and their romance blossom. There was a good mix of romance and suspense. Overall, I was impressed by Elizabeth Camden’s use of historical detail, woven through the story. She writes in such an engaging and fascinating way that brings the world of the Gilded Age to life. This was a superb read and definitely Camden at her best!
