Merry Christmas, Anne (Anne of Green Gables)

Written by Kallie George
Review by Dorothy Schwab Geneviève Godbout (illus.)

Merry Christmas, Anne is an uplifting picture book inspired by L.M. Montgomery’s beloved classic Anne of Green Gables.

It’s Anne’s first Christmas at Green Gables, and she’s a bit nervous about reciting her poem at the concert. Feasting on goose and pudding helps Anne forget her fluttery feelings, and she’s especially delighted by gifts from Matthew and Diana, but how will Anne show gratitude to her new friends? Kallie George’s word choice beams divinely on every page, and she conveys compassion by sharing Anne’s gracious admiration and applauding of her friends before her turn on stage. Anne’s ponderings before her poem lend a lesson on giving to all, and thank goodness for Diana’s example of constant encouragement. Geneviève Godbout’s soothing illustrations of the “trees gleaming like pearls and fields full of snowy dimples” add an extra layer of comfort as the moment for Anne’s poem approaches. Godbout’s images of Diana’s reflection in the bedroom mirror and fairy-size depictions amidst the feast and decorations bring extra sparkle. So, if you find yourself “near despair,” pour yourself into Merry Christmas, Anne. It’s a gift to all kindred spirits.
