Lady Philippa (Pippa) Worthington has stowed away on a ship bound for America near the beginning of the American Revolution. Discovered by the captain, she is put to work as his cabin boy, for Pippa is in disguise. As the boy Pip, she sails across the sea, running from a father who wants to marry her off to the highest bidder.
The characters of this novel set it apart. Pippa is a strong woman who can often be found smoking a cheroot, drinking ale, or dressing as a boy to enter male society. She is sexually adventurous and fights for her independence, just as America is doing. Daniel is an American-born sea captain working for the British during a time of high tension. He struggles to find balance in both his loyalties and his attraction to the beautiful Pippa. Samuel Adams makes an appearance as a true leader of the resistance in Boston.
