With a Kiss and a Prayer (The Cliffehaven Series)

Review by Julie Parker

I enjoyed this novel, which is the 14th in a World War Two historical saga set on the English south coast in a fictional place called Cliffehaven.  The main character is Peggy Reilly, who runs the Beach View Boarding House. However, there is a myriad of characters, often only referred to by Christian name with no explanation of who they are. There is a family tree at the beginning of the book, and a map of Cliffehaven, which does help to place some of the characters in relation to each other, but there are still evacuees and other residents of Beach View who can have puzzling back stories. I suspect most readers of this book will be fans of the series so would not have a problem with this. The historical detail is atmospheric, especially in the descriptions of the waves of aircraft flying towards France and the fighting in Burma – altogether an enjoyable read. Once I got into the book, I felt at times that I was back in wartime Britain as the tide was slowly turning against Hitler.
