Resistance

Written by David R. Weinraub

In this thriller detailing attempts during World War II to save Jews from annihilation by the Nazis and move them to Palestine, Lieutenant Ben Brodsky, although a ninety-day wonder, is highly qualified both physically and mentally, and is offered an assignment to a Ranger battalion.

With gradual training and action he is accepted by the members and with deployment from England gains combat experience. He marries an Orthodox Jewish girl and is introduced to her uncle, a moving force in an attempt to save Jews who, according to two escapees from Auschwitz, are being slaughtered by the thousands. Jews in Hungary are to be next, and through the uncle’s and others’ manoeuvres Ben arrives there to attempt to form resistance. He becomes involved with the beautiful and courageous Rebecca Goldsmith, Raoul Wallenberg of the Swedish Embassy, Russian soldiers and others. The story evolves with gradual group development, its activity, the heroics of Rebecca, Raoul and Ben and the involved, often covert activity, of individuals of influence great and small in their attempt to counter Nazi Eichmann’s moves to annihilate Jews and strengthen hopes for establishment of Israel.

Conclusion: Slightly annoying absence/misplacement of articles but an otherwise engaging factually based read.
