Your Heart’s Desire
In 1946, widowed Caroline Marshall and her son, Joe, move to California to start a new life on their own. Moving into the basement apartment of her sister’s house, Caroline has some challenges ahead of her. Not only is the apartment rather dingy and dull, but she needs to find a job to support Joe and herself. Caroline works hard and is soon able to find a new job in the local chocolate factory. A handsome stranger complicates matters, especially when Caroline meets him all over town – at church, at a local diner, and even at M.G. Chocolates. As she begins to heal from her tragic past, Caroline grows into a happy woman with a new perspective on life.
This is a short and sweet romance story. Caroline’s transformation from a dowdy, grieving widow into a strong, sparkling woman was fun to follow. I appreciated the attention to detail in the story and the historical backdrop. This was a delightful read, but one that must be read with a bowl of chocolate nearby. My only complaint is the length of the book – I wish it had been longer with a little more follow-up, as it ends rather abruptly.
