You Are My Sunshine

In wartime England you are supposed to grow up fast and do your bit, and this is how lovely Kay, impetuous Jo, sweet Emily and no-nonsense Biddy – aged from nearly sixteen to eighteen – find themselves together in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force, training to be Bops, or Balloon Operatives. It is 1941, and while the initial Blitz is over, air raids are most definitely not. Operating the barrage balloons is hard and nerve-wracking work, but the four girls forge a close friendship that will support them through thick and thin, as they do their job, learn from their mistakes, face loss, move up the ranks, and seek true love. Full of fascinating detail about the life and struggles of barrage balloon operatives, this re-issuing of Flynn’s 1999 novel offers an engaging home front story with a coming-of-age slant, and a pleasant measure of romance.
