Wanted: Sam Bass

Written by Paul Colt
Review by Jeff Westerhoff

In August 1877, outlaws Sam Bass and Joel Collins rob the Cheyenne and Deadwood stage of gold bars. Colonel David Crook of the Great Western Detective League, operating as a law enforcement group throughout the West, assigns bounty hunter Briscoe Cane to the case. Cane soon learns, while on their trail, that Sam Bass and his gang are behind the train robbery near Big Springs. Cane soon meets up with Beauregard Longstreet of the Pinkerton Detective Agency, who also is tracking Sam Bass. With significant reward money at stake, both agents track the outlaw gang to Texas and compete with each other to capture Bass.

The story is loosely based on factual events from the Rocky Mountain Detective Association. With a fast-paced plot, the book is a real page-turner with crisp dialog. Excellent research of the actual events helped create a true-to-life crime story. I found this book difficult to put down. I’ve read other books by Paul Colt, and he is capable of mixing factual material while spinning an exciting fictional tale.  I highly recommend this western novel and look forward to future stories of the Detective League.
