The White Rock

‘For a long time there was only water here… then, one day, a rock appeared, a white peak above the waves: the first solid object in the world.’ The Rock stood off the coast of Mexico, on the coast of northern Nayarit, and is believed by the local Wixarika and Yoeme people to be where the world began. Pilgrimages have been made to it over the centuries, and four stories are told of people visiting it in 1775, 1907, 1969 and 2020.

It all sounded very interesting but didn’t come up to expectation in the end, as there seemed to be no cohesion between the four. Two of the stories are said to be based on historical events of the region and the others on the author’s imagination. All were fascinating stories to read but did not have anything linking them apart from their visit to the Rock. It is well-written, and each story holds the reader’s interest, but that is all. I hadn’t read any of the author’s other books and regret that this one wouldn’t encourage me to do so. Not one for the bookcase I’m sorry to say.
