Spectres in the Smoke

Written by Tony Broadbent
Review by Gerald T. Burke

It is 1948, and Jethro the cat burglar is off on another adventure. It is also, by the way, a mission for the British secret service, M15. Jethro immediately finds himself immersed in political intrigue as well as orgies and black magic. As the novel progresses, the protagonist goes deeper and deeper into the murky underworld of post-war London, including backroom politics along with the ever-present threats of communism and fascism.

Tony Broadbent has written an intriguing novel of suspense as well as history. The reader gets an up-close look at the shady world of the 1940s cat burglar, including the lingo (a glossary is provided), and a surprising view of the post-war chaos that simmers just below the surface of English society and politics. This is an exciting read!
