Snowdrift, and Other Stories

Written by Georgette Heyer

This book is a collection of the author’s Regency short stories, eleven of which were previously published under the title Pistols for Two; it also includes three newly discovered tales not seen since 1939. A common storyline that appears in quite a few of the stories is that of couples running away to Gretna Green to elope. Most stories do have an element of drama to them; there are a couple of stories that feature duels between men. There are also lighthearted comedic elements to some of the stories, too.

Georgette Heyer brings the Regency period to life with her interesting stories. Heyer recreates the scenes in a vivid way, whether her characters are in a carriage, a public house or outside. The author’s dialogue can be both witty and serious. It certainly makes a change from reading a contemporary woman’s commercial fiction book to be plunged instead into a historical period when the heroes are gallant and the heroines sometimes enterprising and at other times simpering. A highly enjoyable book to be immersed in the romance of the Regency period.
