A mysterious predator slaughtered more than one hundred people from 1764 to 1767. The killings took place in a remote region of France, and in the end two creatures were shot and killed. The attacks ended, but theories still abound. Was the marauder an exotic animal? A werewolf? A wolf-dog hybrid? Or perhaps the murderer was a different type of monster, a human serial killer. The authors have done a fine job assembling the known facts and evidence in this history of the monsters of the Gevaudan, and provide a fascinating glimpse of the era and the poor country people terrorized by this killer. Illustrations and a map add to the appeal of the volume. Readers interested in pre-Revolutionary France, those interested in crypto-zoology, and readers who enjoy a real-life unsolved mystery will no doubt enjoy this book. Recommended, and joining my reference library!
