Treachery on Tenth Street (A Gilded Gotham Mystery)
New York City, 1889: Genevieve Stewart, a high society lady who’s become an investigative journalist, is spending the summer in the heat and grime of the city, chasing down stories with her friend Daniel McCaffrey. And this time the story hits close to home: artists’ models are being killed, and killed in a most gruesome fashion. When Genevieve’s friend Beatrice is found dead, and the police are reluctant to investigate, Genevieve begins her own investigation. As more models are murdered, Genevieve and Daniel chase down clues and try to narrow down the list of suspects, and Genevieve puts herself at risk to discover the killer’s identity.
But there are just too many suspects—including one truly terrifying possibility. Could the killer be an old “lighthearted friend” from England? Could it be—Jack the Ripper?
Treachery on Tenth Street paints a vivid picture of Gilded Age New York, from painters’ studios to a gangster’s lair; from slums to the attractions of Coney Island (including a giant elephant that holds a dance floor and a restaurant!). The heat is almost palpable, and the tension is high. A fine, vivid mystery that made me want to read more in this series.
