You’ve Got Plaid (Prince Charlie’s Angels, 3)

You’ve Got Plaid is a romance set at the time of Culloden in Scotland (1746) centering on a woman looking for acceptance as Prince Charlie’s messenger and a bastard who has defied his father by siding with the Jacobites. The story ends up steamy and interesting, but gets off to a slow start, when the bickering scenes between the protagonists feel overly long, particularly in the context of the immediate aftermath of Culloden.

The title creates an expectation of a much lighter tone than the book has for the first half, and it never quite reaches the tongue-in-cheek nature of the title, although there is one chapter that almost gets there. Instead, most of the story takes place in the shadow of the slaughter of Culloden and the consequential persecution of the Highlanders. Once past the expectation and through the first couple of chapters, the book hits its stride and is quite enjoyable as you begin to care about the characters.
