Lady Maggie’s Secret Scandal
Lady Maggie Windham, the illegitimate daughter of the Duke of Moreland, was adopted by her father and taken in as a member of the Windham family—but her mother, an aging courtesan, continues to wreak havoc on her life. When Maggie’s reticule and the letters enclosed in it disappear, she hires private detective Benjamin Hazlit to investigate. Maggie refuses to disclose what the letters say or who they were from, making Hazlit’s task even more difficult. Hazlit proposes that the duo pretend to be in love so he can complete his investigation, but as often happens in romance novels, pretend love quickly turns into real love.
Readers who aren’t familiar with the four earlier books in Burrowes’ ongoing series about the Windham family may find the beginning to be slow-going, as most of Maggie’s siblings drop in for a chat. Once readers have sorted out who’s who, this is a witty Regency romance featuring two engaging protagonists and a villainess determined to bring the charmed Windham family to their knees. Fans of the series can rejoice: there are three Windham sisters who have yet to marry.
