The Governess Game: Girl Meets Duke
Despite her reputation for common sense, Alexandra Mountbatten is a romantic at heart, which is why she fantasises about a very charming man she bumps into in a bookshop. Not that she really expects to see him again. But she does. Chase Reynaud is every bit the rake she assumes him to be, but he does have a desperate need for a governess for his wards, two young girls who have sent previous occupants of the position fleeing. Thus, when Alexandra arrives, hoping to add him to the list of clients for her clock setting service, he offers to employ her as governess instead. She refuses, but fate is not to be denied. After a disastrous mishap, she returns, dripping wet, to accept the offer.
The journey from mutual physical attraction to love is not easy, however, since they must negotiate numerous obstacles, from class differences to their own personal emotional problems.
This is a well-worn Regency formula, but Dare refreshes it with lively humor and interestingly eccentric characters, especially the wards. This will appeal to readers who appreciate a lively romance, rather than worry about historical plausibility. Recommended.
