The Raven Girl

Written by Kathy Cecala
Review by Angela Simmons

On the foggy shores of Inis Ghall, an island off the coast of Connemarra, a young girl with raven-black hair and golden skin washes ashore. Some of the villagers believe she is a selkie, while others believe her to be a dark spirit. While the young girl, Marra, is able to avoid her pursuers, Adean, a young scholar studying to be a priest, travels with his mentor from Galway to the island to investigate this mysterious castaway. When he finally lays eyes on Marra, his whole world changes, as she challenges every notion he’d previously held. After falling in love with her, Adean must fight to save her.

Although pitched to a YA audience, this novel will appeal greatly to adults as well. The writing is captivating; author Kathy Cecala weaves a beautiful story set in a rapidly changing world. In The Raven Girl, old worlds collide and new ones are discovered. There’s action, adventure, mystery, romance, intrigue, and compelling characters. A brilliant book.
