This very attractive slim hardback is well designed to introduce young readers to the history and complexity of the Roman Empire. The language is accessible, yet detailed, placing emphasis using capital letters to highlight specific unfamiliar terms and characters.

The witty illustrations are easy to follow as the reader is introduced to the various stages of the Roman Empire’s development beginning with the legend of Romulus and Remus. It covers the rise and fall of the Empire, the army, religion, inventions, structures, daily life and the darker side of ‘relaxation’ including the bloody gladiatorial combats and the dependency on slavery.

This book presents a myriad of factual detail in a colourful, attractive and fun way. The illustrations are skilfully drawn to provide fresh humour including many memorable facts, which make for a stimulating learning experience. The delightful pull-out timeline helps to place these events in a meaningful way that illustrates the scale of Rome’s domination and impact on world history.

The quality of the book is high, giving it a lovely feel, and great attention has obviously been paid to every aspect. The wonderful use of colour, wording, font and precision is exceptional, making it a read I would definitely recommend to children from the age of 8+ to encourage an interest in the subject.
