Toffee Apples and Quail Feathers: New Stories From Call the Midwife

The death of the original author of the book, Jennifer Worth, provided a literary legacy for her husband and family. We can understand their excitement at uncovering material in notebooks belonging to her that had not previously been published, and which gave them hope for extending this popular series. It was with much anticipation that I had delved into this book expecting that the contents would be a cohesive collection of new tales from the well-loved characters on the TV series Call the Midwife.

Sadly, though the new content is enjoyable, it is limited, and the reader is given a variety of storylines from previous books alongside the repetition of aspects within this volume. Perhaps a reader who dips in and out may find it a more rewarding experience than one who wishes to progress from cover to cover. A disappointing read, and not worth buying the hardback volume for the sparse content.
