The Maccabean Revolt of 167 BCE is familiar to many through the holiday of Hanukkah. Less well known is that some Jewish people fled instead of fighting, to continue practicing their religion in peace. This beautifully illustrated book tells the story of one group which landed in India. Legend has it that Elijah aided them, and Elijah Rock is still a place of importance to the Jewish community in India.

The author does a wonderful job of bringing this ancient story into the present day. The author’s note also covers other migrations of Jewish people to India. This resonated with me, as I’ve had the good fortune to tour one of the old synagogues in Cochin.

On a Chariot of Fire is meant for ages 4-8 but would also be a great read for older kids (and adults). It illustrates how emigration can create a lasting, rich culture without either side having to give up their faith or customs.
