Four Weeks of Scandal (Hazards of Dukes, 5)

Octavia Holton owes money to a moneylender with a harsh policy concerning late payments. Fortunately, she and her sister have recently inherited their father’s house; unfortunately, he lost it in a bet with a neighbor, whose son disputes her claim. Gabriel Fallon is, however, fair-minded. Not only is he prepared to wait four weeks, but he even helps her search for evidence her father won it back. Though their interests diverge, they do share an attraction that strengthens while both live under the same roof. The resolution seems obvious, particularly after Gabriel retells the story of Persephone and Hades to the household, but can they overcome the obstacles?

The 19th-century context is rather vague and the plot unlikely, but these matter little since the focus is upon the protagonists’ character development. Octavia is impulsive, stubborn, and determined to succeed in the sisters’ gambling business. Gabriel is cautious and scholarly, with a particular interest in classical mythology. As both characters learn from their experiences, however, they recognize that compromise and co-operation can lead to better outcomes, and their journey is an entertaining one for the reader. Refreshing to meet a romance hero who is not a rake. Recommended.
