Druids is another piece of solid research and interpretation from Dr. Ross, whose earlier Pagan Celtic Britain is regarded as seminal. The Druids were an aristocratic class, and their power, both spiritual and political, was immense. Beginning with classical commentators, who observed those they conquered, Dr. Ross draws together information from Irish vernacular literature and archeological sites to illuminate the lives of men and women who were much more than magicians. Her research, following the pioneering folklorist Alexander Carmichael, showed some amazing survivals.
