Catacombs of Vanaheim

Written by Richard Denning
Review by Anne Holt

An ideal read for Young Adults, the fantasy-based next adventure in Richard Denning’s Nine Worlds series is a thrilling action-packed read. The Catacombs of Vanheim starts where the first book, Shield Maiden left off. Set in Anglo-Saxon Britain, Anna and her companions, Lar and Wilburgh, enter into a quest to save their village from the dangers of the Bifrost, a magic doorway between the Nine Worlds. The historic detail is brilliantly woven into the narrative creating a seamless join with the magic and fantasy excitement.

There are a few errors of presentation where words are hyphen-split between pages – and there are a couple of missing commas and incorrect capitalisation of nouns, but another proof read and skilful final edit would soon sort this. I also personally think an alternative cover design would give the book a less ‘self-published’ feel, although the artist’s interior illustrations are superb. Denning is a talented wordsmith and as a totally self-published author deserves to do well with all his books.
