Sword of the War God

Review by Sean Churchfield

Set in the dying days of the Roman Empire, the book follows the fortunes of the Burgundar clans and their leaders from a disastrous battle and loss of their homelands, through to resettlement. The story unfolds against a background of changing tribal alliances, rivalries among the ruling clique of the Burgundars, takes in the rise of Attila as the Hun leader, and closes with the retreat of the plague-ridden Hun armies from Italy.

I was drawn into the plot with its many twists and turns. As the storylines for the different characters emerge, Tim Hodkinson weaves them into a compelling narrative as the events of the time unfold. There is so much happening in the story that the outcome remains uncertain until the end.

This book kept me turning pages. Thoroughly enjoyable.
