Trouble in Texas
John Whyte, an Englishman who has been in America since 1862, served as a Union colonel during the Civil War. He is asked to become a detective for Allan Pinkerton’s detective agency. General Phil Sheridan, his former commander in the war, has requested help in resolving the theft of Army payroll and helping the Union tax collectors in Texas during Reconstruction. His faithful sidekick, Khan Singh, an Indian Sikh who has become his bodyguard and served as his sergeant in the recent war, accompanies John to Texas.
Sub-titled as a “John Whyte Novel of the American West,” the series follows the adventures of the Englishman living in the West. The action is fast-paced and, as I discovered, a real page-turner – the story kept me interested from beginning to end. I like the major characters; they are well formed and very credible. I especially enjoyed reading about John Whyte, who comes off as very sympathetic and a different kind of hero. It’s a real pleasure to read, and I look forward to reading further John Whyte adventures in the future.
