The Time Keeper is a lively mystery set in Edinburgh, Scotland in the year 1902. When eleven-year-old Malcolm’s best friend, Peter, becomes unexplainably ill, Malcolm is desperate to find a cure. Tragedy enters the story when Peter’s father, Jack (a renowned clock repairman and Malcolm’s mentor) is found dead at the bottom of the stairs to an iconic city clock tower. Malcolm must use all the skills and knowledge he has learned from Jack to unravel a secret message that is concealed among the city’s landmark clocks. At the center of the puzzle is a watch belonging to the father of Dr. Fiona MacIsaac.

When one mystery is solved, three more seem to pop up in this action-thriller by author and pediatric intensive care doctor Meagan Mahoney. Historical subjects are referenced lightly, giving a nod to the first female doctors of the new century, who were often barred entry into a practice or even accused of witchcraft. The Dr. MacIsaac character provides an interesting profile for a timely discussion about women in leadership roles. Special attention is given to historical landmarks and some Scottish sayings are peppered throughout the story (with explanations) giving the story a wonderful sense of place. The analogies between time and medicine are clever and thought-provoking, providing middle-graders an opportunity for a deeper, more meaningful reading experience.
