The Peace Weaver
This volume collects five stories starring Charles Barnitz’s main character, 8th century former monk-turned-advocate, Hring, in a Britannia that has descended into small-holds and violence in the wake of the withdrawal of Roman forces. The stories are very rich in period details and flavor; Barnitz summons the world of Dark Age Britain with skill and confidence. The pace of the stories change rapidly but adeptly, with some tales leaning more toward plot (and violence – the descriptions throughout are extremely vivid) and others more toward contemplation.
The characters are all well-realized, Hring naturally foremost among them, and readers discover a lot about him while unobtrusively learning a lot about his era.
