The Norman Conquest

Written by Marc Morris
Review by Sarah Cuthbertson

In starting his account long before 1066 and ending it with the death of William the Conqueror, Marc Morris (author of Castle and A Great And Terrible King) gives us not only the story of the Conquest itself but also an understanding of the complex events on both sides of the Channel that brought it about, and the chaos and deep changes that resulted from it. This is popular history of the highest order: detailed, lucid and entertaining, with a dash of dry wit and a strong narrative flow that isn’t impeded at all by the author’s careful evaluation of the evidence.
