Ned Kelly: The Story of Australia’s Most Notorious Legend

Written by Peter Fitzsimons
Review by Cathy Powell

Ned Kelly’s reputation as Australia’s most notorious outlaw is part of the fabric of Australian history in general. Peter Fitzsimons’ book builds on previous research on Kelly by going through the main events that led to his eventual demise. The narrative covers Kelly’s life, going into minute detail regarding the important battles that he fought. Whether he was a legend or a criminal is something that readers will have to decide for themselves.

Fitzsimons’ writing style certainly lends to the ease with which this book can be read. After all, at over 800 pages it is a serious tome. There are a lot of primary research articles that have been quoted within the book that add to the story. Fitzsimons’ narrative flows easily, and there are a series of photographs that help bring it to life. There are so many names mentioned, it is sometimes hard to keep track of all of them, particularly the police and their various ranks.
